Detecting Ovarian Cysts With Ultrasound

So, what role does an ultrasound play in detecting ovarian cysts?

In most cases, pelvic ultrasounds do not provide definite diagnosis on the type of ovarian cysts, and only describes the mass by location and size. However, this information may be useful as well. A cyst that is described as fluid filled with regular borders is often a simple follicular cyst.

However, a complex ovarian cyst provides more of a concern. This type of cyst is a mixture of solid and fluid elements, or is purely solid. There is also the presence of irregular borders or internal walls dividing the cyst into separate spaces.

If simple ovarian cysts can usually only be diagnosed by vaginal ultrasound, then the only way to detect complex cysts like endometriosis or dermoid cysts is through ultrasounds. According to a study done by Karen Jermy of BiomedExperts, making a correct diagnosis for possible endometriosis or dermoid types of complex ovarian cysts using ultrasound is high. In the study, after the mass was removed it was found that ultrasound was successful in predicting 96% of endometriosis cysts and 97% of dermoids. There were no ovarian cancers found.

Good news indeed!
